🩺 Is Your Credit Score Healthy? Time for a Financial Checkup! August 2026
🚦 What’s Your Financial “Health Score”?
Your credit score may be only three digits but it can have a BIG impact on your financial life!
Do you know your current credit score? More importantly, do you know what it means?
Think of your credit score like a financial report card. It gives lenders and other businesses an idea of how responsibly you have managed credit and debt. Your credit score can influence your ability to qualify for credit cards, auto loans, mortgages, and personal loans. Credit information may also be considered by landlords, utility companies, and insurance providers. That’s why your credit score is a number you want to understand, monitor, and protect.
📊 Know Your Number
Credit scores generally range from 300 to 850:
Score                  Rating
300-579Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Poor
580–669                Fair
670–739                Good
740–799                Very Good
800–850                Exceptional
A higher score can make it easier to qualify for credit and may help you receive more favorable borrowing terms.
But remember: Your credit score isn't your financial worth! It is simply one piece of your overall financial picture.
🩺 What Goes Into Your Credit Score?
Just like a doctor looks at several vital signs to evaluate your physical health, your credit score is based on several financial “vital signs.”
đź’ł Payment History
Do you pay your bills on time?
This is one of the most important factors affecting your credit score. Even one missed payment can cause problems, so consider setting up automatic payments or reminders.
📉 Credit Utilization
How much of your available credit are you using?
If you have a $10,000 credit limit and owe $8,000, your utilization is 80%.
A common guideline is to keep your credit utilization below 30%, but lower is generally better.
đź“… Length of Credit History
How long have you been managing credit?
A longer history of responsible credit management can be beneficial.
🔄 Credit Mix
What types of credit do you have?Â
Your credit profile may include credit cards, auto loans, student loans, mortgages, and other accounts.
🆕 New Credit
How often are you applying for new credit?
Opening several new accounts or applying for multiple accounts in a short period can affect your credit profile.
đź’ˇ FINANCIAL WELLNESS TIP
Don't wait until you need a loan to check your credit!
Make checking your credit report part of your regular financial wellness routine.
Look for:
✔️ Accounts you don't recognize ✔️ Incorrect balances ✔️ Payments incorrectly reported as late ✔️ Outdated information ✔️ Signs of possible identity theft
You can access free credit reports from AnnualCreditReport.com, the federally authorized source for free credit reports.
Know your number. Know what's on your report. Take action when something isn't right.
đźš‘ Is Your Credit in Need of a Financial Checkup?
If your score isn't where you want it to be, don't panic—and don't ignore it!
Small, consistent steps can make a difference over time. Start by:
1. Pay your bills on time. Automate payments whenever possible.
2. Get caught up on past-due accounts. Create a plan to bring delinquent accounts current.
3. Pay down credit card balances. High-interest credit card debt can be especially damaging to your financial health.
4. Watch your debt.
Know how much you're paying toward debt each month and compare it with your income.
5. Check your credit reports.
Don't assume everything on your report is correct.
